Gamification or gamification or even “gamification” is the use of techniques associated with games that facilitate learning and improve people's skills. With the use of game techniques (or “gaming”) in the various aspects in which it can be applied, we see advantages and disadvantages in gamification. So let's see what gamification is.

Origin of Gamification

Gamification, a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, “gamification”, basically consists in using games as a means to encourage people to increase their involvement and motivation, in order to learn and enhance knowledge and behavioral skills.

In games there is an aspect linked to fun. Therefore, by making the learning process playful, this technique can also be called gamification.

The Dutch historian Johan Huizinga defends that the game is an activity innate to man and animals, being therefore prior to culture. It is in the book, Homo Ludens, which he wrote in 1938 and published in 1944, that the origins of this idea lie.

The term "gamification" was coined in 2002 by the British programmer Nick Pelling.

Advantages of Gamification

During a game we can see some benefits of this technique.

Persistence and Resilience

In the game, to get to the next stage, surpass a goal, earn points, medals, ranking positions, checkpoints, new challenges or get other forms of recognition and reward, the ability to be resilient is crucial.

Being able to not fold even if the play doesn't go well.

Keep calm, rethink strategies and go back to the game, to “gamification”, to surpass the goal, conquer levels and break records.

These are, in fact, “soft skills” that are highly appreciated by companies when they seek to recruit employees.

Often each play has a limited response time or the speed of response has a positive contribution to performance. This forces you to focus on the game, set priorities and increase productivity.

Thus, the satisfaction of getting things done faster helps to create personal and group routines and methods to improve productivity, so important for results, both at the company and individual level.

Disadvantages of Gamification

There are situations where one or more team members are not aligned in the same spirit.

The game is a way to improve the abilities and performance of each one so that the group's work is optimized.

For example, one of the members does not understand that knowing how to listen is very important.

Now, interpreting the other's opinion and framing it in your idea to achieve an even better strategy than the one that existed, is the basis of success.

It is very characteristic of the self-centered personality, who thinks he is right and is not worth discussing the idea. You may even be afraid to compare your ideas with those of others and choose not to allow discussion.

In this context, the phrase “I'm never wrong and I rarely have doubts” from a former politician who, ironically, doubts he ever said it…

It is, however, an example of what not to be done.

In these cases, gamification loses its usefulness. The remaining members of the group will tend not to participate in the decisions and let them belong to a single individual.

To prevent these situations, it is good for a company that performs gamification to find mentors or coaches who can adjust these behaviors and make them more useful for the group and, in real life, for the company.

On the other hand, if they are online games, always be careful to use reliable sources. Just saying “gamification” is not enough!

Corporate Environment and Gamification

In companies, gamification is used as a way to increase the knowledge of employees, stimulate their actions towards teamwork, challenge skills and creativity, encourage planning skills, meeting deadlines and goals and the ability to make decisions that place themselves within the scope of the game.

Many games are in virtual format, giving people greater involvement in these technologies and also creating a greater bond between the company and employees.

In personal terms, gamification helps to create a spirit of competitiveness and teamwork.

Gamification in Education and Teaching

Through gamification it is possible to transform work and study routines into tasks that, being more challenging and competitive, increase the levels of satisfaction and pleasure.

The need for competition, inherent to human beings, is present in games. On the other hand, at the end of each action there is an immediate feedback that shows us the result, positive or negative.

The reward is also shown immediately, whether in the form of a prize, points or a change of level. If the result is negative, it challenges the skills to find better solutions. In the case of teaching, it will allow you to review what you have learned and gain a better understanding of the subject.

At certain moments in the game it seems that it is no longer possible, for example, to go further. Here comes our ability to resist, not to give up in the face of difficulty.

It takes an extra effort that, when awarded, generates a feeling of epic moment, like Bartolomeu Dias folding the Cabo das Tormentas. Imagine!

In addition to what is done in schools, at home, in Distance Education (EAD) mode, the family can play together, playing and, at the same time, learning.

Some games from other times, such as Monopoly, Chess, Trivial, are now also played with the help of virtual technologies.

One of the most interesting games is the game to learn foreign languages, provided by the Duolingo platform, launched in 2011. It presents a small quiz to understand the level at which we are in the language. Then it presents a sequence of questions that will make us progress in learning.

The Routine of Life and Gamification

Most of the time, after a day at work, our routine is oriented towards watching TV or reading, less and less frequently, watching the cell phone, Tic Toc, Instagram and, sometimes, even are faced with situations of greater risk, when technological literacy is still low.

Why not devote a few minutes a day to games that use our memory or appeal to our reasoning or visual acuity and manual dexterity!

It's like maintaining physical activity, essential to our health. The gamification activity keeps our mental abilities active, in addition to those that are routinely used in the professional path.

The progress of the activity in real life is slow. The rewards are either slow or they often don't come into being. This causes a feeling of frustration that can lead to loss of professional performance and personal instability.

Gamification techniques help keep the ego high.

It is therefore beneficial to invest a few moments daily for gamification or “gamification” activities.

Activities in the form of games, bring in addition to fun, a sense of accomplishment.

As we've seen, gamification has advantages and disadvantages but the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Important to release our positive energies and, in parallel, learn and improve our technical, cultural and civic capacities.
