The professions that will be most valued in the future of the job market are those that, directly or indirectly, are linked to science and technology and the information society. The Effects of Science and Technology on Professions in the World

The 2023 World Economic Forum (WEF) Report estimates that, between 2023 and 2027, 23% of the job market will change and will accelerate the appearance of new tasks accompanied by the disappearance of others.

There will be an expansion of remote work, with an impact on the well-being and quality of life of workers, which could worsen existing inequalities if there is no proactive effort from the community.

With the increase in scientific knowledge and technologies in the health area, in a few decades we have achieved a much higher life expectancy.

It is expected that it will be possible not to have to go to a hospital or health center to carry out a clinical assessment.

With people's clinical information, available in health systems and with appropriate artificial intelligence algorithms, a more appropriate diagnosis and treatment can be provided autonomously.

But also, with the increase in the average age of the population, activity in the area of ​​health and well-being is one of the areas with strong potential for global growth.

Future professionals in this area will be doctors, nurses, caregivers, physiotherapists, geneticists, mental health specialists, biological engineers and hospital technicians, among others.

The “Green Economy” will also have greater relevance. Environmental engineering and specialties linked to the impact of climate change face challenges in reconciling technology with the environment, alternative and renewable energy, waste management and the supply of drinking water, which will be scarce in Portugal.

These emerging roles that were highlighted in all four WEF reports include data analysts and scientists, AI and machine learning experts, and digital transformation.

The roles experiencing the greatest decline are administrative or secretarial roles, including data entry operators, executive and administrative secretaries, as well as accounting clerks, bank tellers, postal service employees and ticket office employees.

WEF’s 2023 “The Future of Jobs” Report points to a set of professions as being in greatest demand in the future, of which we highlight:

The results of this research suggest that the greatest growth between 2023 and 2027 will be for Agricultural Equipment Operators (9), Heavy Truck and Bus Drivers (31) and Vocational Education Teachers (34).

Combined, these three functions represent more than half of the total expected job destruction.

Globally, WEF analysis suggests that 69 million jobs will be created and 83 million jobs destroyed, leading to a contraction in global labor markets of 14 million jobs over the next five years, or 23% at the current rate of change, although subject to a high degree of uncertainty.

Blockchain technology, still much discussed and controversial in ethical and political aspects, is based on the creation of cryptocurrencies (bitcoins, etherium, litecoin, among others).

This technology implies a paradigm shift, from centralized data storage in an entity to a chain of computational resources, which share and validate information.

Don and Alex Tapscott believe that these technologies allow safe monetary transactions and are the beginning of a new cycle of “Internet of Value” (IoV) an evolution of the Internet of Information (IoI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

In addition to technical knowledge and “soft skills”, abilities to think critically and innovatively, “thinking skills”, and to know and continually learn new digital techniques, “digital skills” are necessary.

These skills are key to staying relevant and competitive in a modern workplace.

The Human Factor in the Future of Professions in the World

There are functions linked to health, where human contact is required to be carried out with sensitivity and affection, which are difficult to replace by robot technology and artificial intelligence.

Some skills such as analytical thinking, creativity, initiative, leadership, resilience, service orientation (client or results), negotiation skills, critical thinking, complex problem solving, digital literacy, people management, planning will be increasingly necessary. and coordination, emotional intelligence, judgment, strategic thinking, cognitive flexibility, driving change, logical reasoning, communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work in a team.

Each, per se, will have to be able to manage their own development to be able to actively learn, using the training resources available globally.

Companies also have to adapt and create conditions for their employees to evolve in knowledge and progress professionally.

In order to have more opportunities for evolution, workers must constantly be learning, gaining new experiences and without fear of the challenges of change.
