Evolution of the HDI in Portugal - Human Development Index

In the 2019 United Nations Report, we checked the classification of countries in relation to a set of indicators that are linked to the Human Development Index (HDI). Portugal appears in 40th place in the HDI ranking, in the group of countries with “very high” human development. We will analyze the evolution of the HDI in Portugal over the past 28 years, using the information contained in this United Nations Report.

We mentioned in previous articles some indicators produced for example by the OECD, with the evolution of the progress and development, but also in the report of the Bloomberg on health or, still, about the well-being index.

The Lusophone Countries

Let's see what happened in the Portuguese speaking countries.

Brazil is among the countries with high human development. The human development index (HDI) in 1990 was 0,613 and reached a value of 0,761 in 2018. It thus presented a growth of 0,78% but dropped 3 places in the HDI ranking.

Classified in the group of Countries with average human development are:

Cape Verde which between 2000 and 2018 had an HDI evolution of 0,48%, down 1 position in the ranking.

Timor Leste increased the HDI by 0,13% between 2000 and 2018 and decreased 2 positions.

S. Tomé and Príncipe which between 1990 and 2018 increased the HDI by 1,19%, rose 5 positions in the HDI ranking.

The evolution of the HDI of Angola, between 2010 and 2018, registered an increase of 1,50% and increased 1 position.

Guinea Bissau and Mozambique, which are among the countries with the lowest human development, grew 1,01% between 2010 and 2018 and 2,61% between 1990 and 2018, respectively.

The Evolution of the HDI in Portugal

Between 1990 and 2018, the evolution of the HDI in Portugal increased, in line with the growth of OECD countries. In this period there was an average growth of 0,64%, slightly above the average growth in the OECD (0,47%). Up 1 position in the HDI ranking.

The biggest increase in the 4 countries we compared was that of Brazil, which increased its HDI by 0,78%, although it fell by 3 positions.

Sweden and the USA went down 4 and 3 positions, respectively, in the HDI ranking and Spain went up one position, as did Portugal.
