Boat trip on the Douro River
The boat trip started at Cais da Ribeira, early in the morning.
The Douro is one of the largest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula and the largest river that crosses Portugal. Born in Spain, in the Serra de Urbião, flowing between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Porto seems to emerge from the Douro River.
We say goodbye to one of the bridges in the city of Porto and, at a gentle pace, a rabelo boat passes us, also on a tour of the Douro.
The rabelo boat is a typical Douro wine boat, always linked to the transport of the Port Wine barrels from the farms where it is produced to Gaia, where the wine is stored.
Boat without a keel and with a flat bottom to sail the river even where the depth, in certain areas, was very little.
On our trip down the Douro River, we passed the Crestuma-Lever and Carrapatelo dams that allow boats to overcome the gaps that exist.
Before the construction of the dams, these gaps were overcome with great difficulty.
The boats, even with flat bottom, in some places did not pass and had to be pulled by men or by oxen tow paths.
The Crestuma-Lever dam, was built in 1985 and was the last to be built.
The Carrapatelo dam is huge, with the largest lock on the Douro River and one of the largest in the world.
The Douro Wine Region and beautiful landscapes of Portugal
We continue the boat trip in the Douro, and here we are in the Douro Wine Region!
It was considered as a Region Demarcated by the Marquis of Pombal and instituted in September 1756, by Alvará do Rei D. José I.
And the boat trip in the Douro ends. We arrived at Peso da Régua, our destination for that day.
Don't miss the opportunity to try a boat trip on the Douro!
