Douro River Wine Tour

Boat trip on the Douro, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Portugal

During our getaways in Portugal, this trip along the Douro River, passing through the landscape of the Douro Wine Region, was a very pleasant walk. In one of the most beautiful places and where you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Portugal, the boat trip on the Douro, accompanied by friendly people of different nationalities was fantastic. We went and we loved it!

The Douro is one of the largest rivers in the Iberian Peninsula and the largest river that crosses Portugal. Born in Spain, in the Serra de Urbião, flowing between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

We say goodbye to one of the bridges in the city of Porto and, at a gentle pace, a rabelo boat passes us, also on a tour of the Douro.

The rabelo boat is a typical Douro wine boat, always linked to the transport of the Port Wine barrels from the farms where it is produced to Gaia, where the wine is stored.

Boat without a keel and with a flat bottom to sail the river even where the depth, in certain areas, was very little.

On our trip down the Douro River, we passed the Crestuma-Lever and Carrapatelo dams that allow boats to overcome the gaps that exist.

Before the construction of the dams, these gaps were overcome with great difficulty.

The boats, even with flat bottom, in some places did not pass and had to be pulled by men or by oxen tow paths.

The Crestuma-Lever dam, was built in 1985 and was the last to be built.

We continue the boat trip in the Douro, and here we are in the Douro Wine Region!

It was considered as a Region Demarcated by the Marquis of Pombal and instituted in September 1756, by Alvará do Rei D. José I.

And the boat trip in the Douro ends. We arrived at Peso da Régua, our destination for that day.

World Heritage

At the beginning of a mild autumn, we visited this area considered by the Unesco, in 2001, as one of the world heritage sites.

Don't miss the opportunity to try a boat trip on the Douro!

  1. If you are thinking of taking the tour in the Douro, I advise you to do the descent beforehand, Régua -Porto as for me it is always very good to take the Porto-Régua trip by train…the stunning ride always by the river.
I've done it both ways and I think the train ride is beautiful, then if you can do Régua- Pinhão by boat and get off by train, (beautiful beautiful) at Pinhão visit while waiting for the train the Vintage hotel now Nau, but that was the Taylor palace a superb garden a beautiful pier not to be missed, here's the tip.

  2. I will go as soon as I have the opportunity. Maybe it is advisable to predict overnight stay in Porto the previous night, right? Will they do on weekends? And how much does it cost?

    1. Hi Pedro,
You have several options, either in the type of boats or the route.
It can be from Porto to Régua, visit to a Douro farm and wine tasting from Porto and Régua to Porto return by bus, which was our option. The trip starts early in the morning, so sleeping in Porto makes sense.

  3. Dear Pedro, I just read the account of the tour in the Douro, and I must say that I liked it. I already knew it, I also went through the locks and walked by boat and car through the Douro wine region. It's incredible. I would say more: it is a place to always return. Congratulations, therefore, for the initiative.

If I may, I launch a challenge from here: the Bird organize a new tour, more towards Spring, with overnight in the Régua area, visit one of the Douro wine estates, and return again by boat. Try to get a tempting budget. One night's sleep is enough. A visit to one of the producers would be mandatory. You will see that the idea certainly has a significant adhesion.

    And, That's all.

    A hug and congratulations.

A unique tour in the world. I've done it by boat for several days and would repeat it again.
Nobody should leave without leaving this journey to be done!
Congratulations Bird. You can continue to sing on my shoulder. A hug.

    1. Dear Fernanda, We are going to plan a new “flight” on the Douro River and we will give you news soon.
Thanks for the comment and hug.
